Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net amount by one plus the VAT rate expressed as a decimal. At 20% VAT, a net price of 100 becomes 100 x 1.20 = 120 gross, of which 20 is VAT. The calculator does this for you when you choose the Add VAT option.

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross amount by one plus the VAT rate. At 20% VAT, a gross price of 120 becomes 120 / 1.20 = 100 net, so the VAT portion is 20. Dividing by 0.20 instead is the most common mistake and gives a wrong answer.

Which VAT rate should I use for a client in another EU country?

For B2B sales to a business in another EU member state that has a valid VAT identification number, you normally charge no VAT at all and the reverse charge applies. For B2C sales to private individuals, you generally charge VAT, which for digital services is the rate of the customer country.

Is VAT the same as sales tax?

No. VAT is charged at every stage of the supply chain and businesses reclaim the VAT they paid on their own purchases. US sales tax is charged only once, at the final sale to the consumer. This is why a US client will not have a VAT number.
